MARILYN’s Letter
Hi everyone!
Firstly, I must apologise for the delay in records released, but I do feel the next single, and indeed the album (which is now completed and titled "DESPITE STRAIGHT LINES") will surely make up for the delay. The single "BABY U LEFT ME" was recorded last November in Detroit and has lots of great musicians and singers accompanying me – so do look out for it!
Some of you will notice that I’ve cut my hair off, I think it looks a little more serious, after all, you can’t be "Diana Ross Part 2" forever! I’ve just finished one days filming of the new video and tomorrow I’m off to New York to finish it. I have a feeling it’s gonna be good?
Thank you for your letters/cards/and lucky me, presents. I’m the laziest writer so please forgive me!!!
Valerie and Robert have been working very hard so please bear with us if there’s any delay in receiving T-shirts, posters and things.
I’m very fond of the new B-side "THIRD EYE", so if you want, try to listen to it, it’s a little different. I’ve written loads of songs for the next album and can’t wait to say a big thank-you to all the people who voted me no. 9 best singer on the B.P.I. awards – what a surprise!
I’ve so many plans and hopes for the future and can’t wait to be full recognised as a lyricist and singer – so many things have changed in my life. It would take pages to let you know – I only hope you continue to appreciate my work, after all – it’s you I do it for!!
See you all soon (tour ’85)
Love + serenity
MARILYN
"BABY YOU LEFT ME" RELEASED!!!
Robert’s Letter
Hi there everybody,
Great news at last! BABY YOU LEFT ME, MARILYN’s next single, will be out on the 5th of April. It really is a great record, and I know that when you hear it for yourselves, you’ll agree that it’s been worth waiting for. The video is ready too, and looks fab – MAZ is very pleased with it. Let’s hope that now it’s only a matter of a week or two before MARILYN blasts his way back into our lives.
We’ve delayed sending out this Newsletter until we had a definite release date. I’m sorry if you’ve been getting impatient with us – the hold-ups really weren’t our fault!
More good news is that the album, definitely called DESPITE STRAIGHT LINES has a provisional release date of May 17th. This depends on how well the single goes, so let’s all get together to achieve the one thing we all want to see – MARILYN at the top!
Some of you may have seen MARILYN at Wembley Conference Centre in December when he joined Culture Club on stage together with Elton John, Paul Young, George Michael and others. Well, you screamed loudest for MARILYN and it was great, so keep up the good work!
Bye for now,
Robert

MAZmail
Dear Robert,
You may as well know that I am thoroughly p----- off with you Fan Club.
As I really like MARILYN I didn’t mind paying the £ 5.00 membership fee, but when everything else is cocked-up, I get angry.
Why? What’s happened? Nothing, that’s what!! In May 1984 I sent a cheque to your club. Thirty days later: nothing – you hadn’t even cashed the cheque. I wrote you a letter asking what was going on, and now, six months later, STILL nothing!
So I’m not bothering any more. NOW when I receive the MARILYN Newsletter I even have to open the door in my see-through nightie to pay 23p postage on it.
If MARILYN knew how his Fans were being treated, I expect he would feel the same as me.
Yours lacksly,
DAWN, Welwyn Garden City
Dear Dawn,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re so unhappy with us, so this is my apology to you. I haven’t received your order and cheque, so please try again. By the way, why have you got a door in your see-through nightie?…
Dear MARILYN & all at the Fan Club,
Firstly, I’d just like to acknowledge my appreciation for the speed and efficiency with which you replied with information on the Fan Club earlier this year. As I live on the other side of the world I was not expecting a reply to my letters for months – if at all – but I received several in a matter of weeks, which as well as making my day, impressed me greatly to think that you, MARILYN, care enough to give only the best.
I also didn’t think that you would sign every photo; thanks for that. You’ve not lost any fans here – in fact you’re gaining them by the day!
Thank you for everything, MARILYN. You’ve helped me, so I’ll be doing my best to help you to further your career, and to make you a success!
Love,
MADDY, Victoria, Australia
Dear MAZmail,
I would also like to say that I am very pleased I joined MARILYN’s Fan Club. I have enjoyed taking part in all the competitions. The £ 5 .00 has been very worthwhile, even though I only joined a short while ago…
Love,
PAULA, Gillingham
Dear MARILYN, Robert, Valerie & Graeme,
To quote my father "Is that all MARILYN can afford, a cheap photo-copy?" about your recent Newsletter. I didn’t argue, but after reading the entire thing I realised just how FANTASTIC the Newsletter actually was. The whole idea just fitted together perfectly and I can’t wait till ’85 to read the next one.
Keep up the most fantastic Fan Club Newsletter I’ve ever read.
Love,
ICY WINTERGREEN, Alnwick
What’s he mean "cheap photo-copy"? This is cheap offset litho!!
Hi MAZ,
After receiving your Fan Club Newsletter no. 3, I felt I just had to sit down and write a little something to you. I must say how impressed I am with the layout, and how you have involved all your fans in it…
MANDY "SID" RADFORD, London
Hello!
I’m just writing to say thanks for the latest MAZ newsletter – it’s really triff! Yeah!

These are just a few of the many appreciative letters we’ve received – thanx for all your encouragement and good wishes.
Valerie and Graeme
MARILYN,
I’ve read the other letters in MAZmail and I’d just like to add to them that you really are a great influence on us all, and we care very much about you.
Thank you for bringing so much joy to us.
I love you.

Many of you almost convinced us that you needed MARILYN’s earring, but the winner is Polly Brightman of Carshalton, Surrey, who says:
There’s an ache in my heart
When you’re far from me,
There’s a hole in my ear
Where your earring should be!
Congratulations, Polly, MARILYN’s earring will be on its way to you as soon as we can persuade hum to part with it! Here are some of the near-misses:
My ear rings every time MARILYN’s name is mentioned
Joanne Shawycr, Bickley
Barbara Kingsley should have his earring because it’s great that she’s given up drugs.
Sharon Beales, Herts
Looking at MARILYN I became dizzy and feel onto needle, leaving ear with un-filled hole.
Bernadette Owen, Bolton
My ears have seven earrings, my nose one, I’ve no more for my nipple…
Philip Evans, County Durham
(Ugh! Ed)
To have MARILYN’s earring would be a dream come true, because MARILYN is my dream.
Miss S.T. Simmons, London
It would be second best only to having MARILYN himself.
Lizzy Palmer, London

Q: Who has been your biggest personal influence?
A: Diana Ross
Q: Do you read and believe in horoscopes?
A: Yes.
Q: Have you had any frightening experiences?
A: Shaving a friend’s shoulder and finding how much hair came off!
Q: Have you advice to give to someone going into the music business?
A: Not really – it’s impossible to advise anyone on what they should do. It just depends on the
circumstances and what they feel is best for them.
