And Now For Something Completely The Same

Interview from an as-yet unknown Canadian magazine, kindly donated by Laura Walker (after nagging), from when Her Fabness had her best ever geezer hair (short black & spiky).

He's hot. He's sexy. He's provocative. He's outspoken. He's painfully honest and always says what's on his mind. He's the world's hottest rocker without a record. He's been an innovator of androgyny in the 80s. He's loved by the girls, and by the boys. You may think he's Boy George's lover, but he's not. He's Marilyn.

Marilyn On Marilyn

"I want people to be aware of my music. I want people to be aware of me. I want people to like me. Everyone wants to be liked. I'm not prepared to change myself to be liked. I want people to like me for who I am. Everyone likes something different, so if you're doing it for other people you're constantly unaware of where you're going. I feel positive and confident about who I am, and that's it. I'm patient, hardworking and lazy. I'm every contradiction. I'm an original."

Image

"It gets quite heavy, hard, exciting and new. I like the way I look."

Marilyn (The Name)

"It conjures up a lot of different images. It's a name you can put any identity to. I can change my image and it still fits. It's a very valuable name to me."

Drugs

"I've done them all. Some of them are good, some bad. I wouldn't advise anyone to do any."

PolyGram UK

"The record company in the UK hasn't promoted me as they should have done. Because I'm the artist, which is like a real joke to them, I'm not allowed to give my opinions about my career. They talk to me like I'm the artist, and I don't like that at all. We've come to the point of 'I'm not doing this if you're not doing that', so I'm not doing anything, except trying to terminate my contract so I can move into other areas."

American Record Contract

"I want a record deal for my music, not because of who I am. I could get George to go to a record company tomorrow, but that's not how I want to do it. I've got so many friends that could help, but there's no satisfaction or gratification with that at all. That's not playing fair."

Hit Records

"I think I'm more of an artist. I don't think I give a crap about hit records. Everyone seems to think that it's like the all and end all. Most people who I know that have hit records really ridicule you if you haven't had a hit record. They don't care if the music's good or if you're doing what you want to do. The only thing that matters is if you have a hit or not. I do music that I can listen to at home. I hope someone else is going to like it too. I can't make music for other people."

Fame

"A whole subject within itself. I could talk for hours about it. It means everything and nothing."

Being Real

"Being real and having real people around is important to me. I'm the most truthful person. If someone says something to me I just say what I think, which always gets me in trouble. I can't change that for anyone. I was sitting in a car with Steve Rubell (owner of the Palladium) the other day, and he was giving us a lift to the club. The whole journey he was going on about Liza this and Twiggy that. I said 'You're such a name dropper. Who gives a shit about what you're talking about? What are you actually saying?' He looked at me like, how dare you bring a awareness to what I'm like. You're supposed to play the game, but I don't give a shit."

Diana Ross

"I've been calling her for months, like a typical fan, leaving messages wherever she's been. I left nice ones, I left horrible ones, I left clever ones and I left sarcastic ones. I never expected to hear from her. One night, about 1:30, the phone rang in our hotel suite, and George answered it and said it's Diana. I thought he was joking but it was really her. She is more than I expected her to be. She's mild and aggressive, she's every contradiction that ever lived. She carries it like a beautiful woman. The most unreal thing about her is just how real she is."

Negativity

"I don't want any negative elements in my life. I don't need it, and I can't deal with it. It wastes my time and saps my strength. I've got enough of a stable ground with people I know right now that it's very rare that a negative element comes through."

Intolerance

"I can't stand intolerance. I like people to be tolerant. I'm not tolerant at all, but I can't stand that about myself, and I can't stand it in other people."

Fear

"I try not to be afraid of anything. There must be something I'm frightened of, but I can't quite figure it out."

Happiness

"I'm a happy person. I've been portrayed as being unhappy for the past few weeks but it's just people telling me what they want me to be. I'm not that at all. I'm not going to go into the bathroom and slit my wrists, not on my $1,000 suit."

Groupies

"I haven't met any yet."

Money

"I haven't met any of that yet, either."

Spirituality

"I think everyone is spiritual. Everyone's got spirit. I believe I have spirit. I try to live in harmony with it."

Ultimate Fantasy

"To be in Jamaica, have a nice dinner, then go down to the beach nude and have it off on the beach. I'd be with someone I really love. I'd be drinking white wine and Pimms and listening to Bobby Womack. I'd be with.....wouldn't you like to know."
